Description Numerous ruins indicate that for hundreds of years Belize was heavily populated by the Maya Indians, whose relatively advanced civilization reached its height between A.D. 250 and 900. Eventually the civilization declined leaving behind small groups whose offspring still exist in Belize contributing positively to the culturally diverse population. Britain and Spain fought over the country in the late 1700's until British control over the settlement gradually increased and in 1871, British Honduras was formally declared a British Colony. Recently, constitutional advances to the government lead up to self government and the country's name was changed from British Honduras to Belize on June 1st, 1973. Independence was achieved on September 21, 1981 and a new independence constitution introduced.Today, Belize is an adventurer's paradise where Mayan temples tower above rainforest canopies while an incredibly colorful array of marine wildlife find protection in Belize's Great Barrier Reef. Belize presents unlimited opportunities for the outdoor enthusiast. You will find excellent diving, snorkeling, fishing, hiking, and exploring nature at its best. Every destination in Belize has its share of archaeological and national parks, marine and nature reserves, wildlife sanctuaries. Local Information The Belize Dollar is the local currency. One U.S. dollar is worth two Belize dollars (2 to 1). U.S. dollars are accepted as well as credit cards and traveller's checks. When in doubt, just ask. The official language of Belize is English, although Spanish is also found especially in the northern and western districts. An English Creole dialect is spoken most commonly throughout the country. Tap water is potable throughout the mainland. Bottled water should be used for drinking when at the cayes. When in doubt bottled water is best. Vaccinations or medical clearances are not required. It is recommended that you bring your own prescription drugs and anti-malaria tablets for extended jungle stays. Potable water is available in most areas; however, if in doubt ask or boil your water supply.
