Question: do the haitians still own the dominincan republic?

Question Description:
in the encyclopedia on the dominican republic it said that the rest of the island is still occupied by haiti, i understand it gained it independence in 1844 but do the rest of the dominican republic is controlled by haiti?

Answer#1: Hati was the first nation in the new world where slaves successfully revolted against their 'owners' and establish themselves as their own country. It was the first black republic in modern history. The Dominican Republic or Santo Domingo was a Spanish country. While Hati did invade and control Santo Domingo for 23 years, they eventually over threw the invaders and gained their freedom.

Answer#2: No. The island is now seperated into two different countries; Haiti and the Dominican Republic. There is and has been only one Domincan Republic in which they did gain their independance from Haiti in 1844; as of today they have their own political system and economy. Think of it like when the Americas gained independance from England / Spain / France...they were at one time together, but are now seperate, independant countries.

Answer#3: Haiti and the DR both share and island known as Hispaniola. The western half is Haiti, the eastern half is the DR. They are independent countries.

Answer#4: Haiti owns its section and Dominican Republic owns its own. Each country is separate. Haiti won its independence from France.
