Answer#1: I lived in St. Thomas from 2003-2006 when I moved
there from Cleveland. I could tell you that it was
a culture shock at first, but once I got adjusted
to the local customs (Drive on the left, slower
pace of life, slow service at banks, post offices,
etc.) I was fine. They use US currency, the US
postal system, and as long as you are a US
citizen, you don't need any work permits or visas.
The Local People are very friendly and will go out
of their way to help you sometimes. (If someone
sees you walking down the road, they will offer
you a ride) The beaches are amazing and Magen's
Bay has been named one of the ten best beaches in
the world. The roads are steep and hilly in most
places so most people drive jeeps or 4x4s. One
other thing about The VI is that EVERYTHING is
more expensive here than in the states. From rent
to groceries to gas prices because everything has
to be imported from the US or Puerto Rico. The
Islands get a bad reputation for their high crime
rate but most of the crime is local on local and
in the three years I lived there, I never got
robbed or mugged. Just use common sense and good
judgment (Don't go looking for trouble and you
won't find it) and you'll be fine. Exercise the
same caution and good judgment that you would use
at home in the US. Overall I was glad I did it and
I would recommend it to anyone who wanted to
experience a different way of life.
Answer#2: The U.S Virgin Islands are beautiful and tranquil.
A place where you can relaxe and just let go. The
peolpe are friendly. You have to visit St. Croix
with it's blue waters and great nights life. You
will enjoy it there. I did.
Answer#3: I don't know much about living there, but I can
tell you that Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas is
beautiful. Magens Bay is a must-see! I have been
to several places in the Caribbean, and this is my
favorite.
Answer#4: I can only tell you that St. Croix is nice, but at
the same time kind of boring if you know no one.
They use U.S. currency down there, and alcohol is
real cheap. Uh..........nice beaches, alot of the
fast food chains are down there (McDonald's,
Subways, Domino's, Pizza Hut, Poppa John's)
Footlocker, and Kmart. They drive on the left
hand side of the road. The beaches are pretty
nice. There is a casino on the east end of the
island. Alot of mosquito's, so if you are not use
to that, be prepared. Majority of the people
living on the island either migrated from other
islands, and the U.S. As for the other islands, I
hear that St. Thomas is more of the toursit
attraction, because the Cruise Ships stop there.
There is more action going on there. Most of the
island of St. John is The Virgin Islands National
Park.
